Location & Practicalities

The arctic region around Kiruna is home to a number of “hidden gems” in terms of accommodation. Various fishing and hunting cabins, small mountain top hostels, luxury ski-resort hotels and high quality tourist villages constitute a wide pool of options with various comfort levels which we draw upon to create the exact experience you are looking for.

Location

Kiruna is the main city in the arctic region of Sweden, and the starting point of our tours. It is surrounded by a fantastic mountain and forest region, Sweden’s 6th largest lake Torneträsk, and numerous rivers and creeks. The pristine nature is something every visitor takes to heart: the roaring silence, the evidently fresh air, the absolutely clear and clean water in the rivers and lakes, offering a source of the best imaginable potable water.

At our disposal are more than 100,000 Km2 of unexploited wilderness, with few roads, few towns and villages but an overload of breath-taking experiences.

How to get there

You will fly into the city of Kiruna (airport code KRN), once the worlds largest city (by area!). There are regular flights 3-4 times per day from Stockholm . You can also go by overnight train from Stockholm, or 2 hours train from Tromsö in Norway.

What to bring

You do actually not need very much. (Trust us!) And more importantly, whatever you bring, you will have to transport with you! Either tied to the snowmobile, or on our sledge. In any case, we suggest you bringing only what is necessary, and any extra items or bags can be safely kept at our base in Kiruna.

For your snowmobile trip we therefore recommend 1 (one) soft bag, containing your clothes and personal items. An indicative list is:

  • Personal hygiene items
  • Underwear and socks (but you will have boots for arctic climate, normal socks suffice!)
  • 1 long underwear
  • T-shirts, sports clothing (to wear under thermos overalls)
  • 1 pair of Jeans/trousers
  • 1 warm sweater/pullover
  • Sleeping attire as per personal preference. Please see item 3.
What we provide:
  • Thermo overall
  • Thermo boots
  • Gloves/hat
  • Helmet
  • Bed linen or sleeping bags (as applicable, depending on the tour)
  • Towels

Mobiles and internet

Want mobile networks and internet access? Well, then you have missed the point of ”nature” and ”wilderness”.  😉  But we have good news. There is coverage available when we are in the vicinity of populated areas, primarily in the evenings at our accommodations. But keep in mind that the tours often go through areas well beyond GSM coverage. In some cases also the accommodations are too remote, so do not count on being reachable while you are enjoying your long awaited adventure! Set the time aside to enjoy the unique experience. The calls and work will wait for a few days, or at least until the evening.

Weather

A common question is the whether. “I do not like it when it is cold”…. First of all, the temperature can be anything between +5 and -35 degrees C, depending on the exact season. Typically, December through February are more cold, while March-April are much warmer. But do not worry, it is a very pleasant environment where also “warmth-loving individuals” find it nice. No matter the temperature number, you should know this: 1. We provide all the appropriate arctic gear, so you will not be cold. The only thing that is exposed is your face, which is protected by your helmet and visor. 2. The climate is very dry, so -20 degrees C is significantly more pleasant here that 0 degrees C in London or New York. A typical winter day is around -10 degrees C and makes for a beautiful and pleasant climate for outdoor activities such as snowmobiling.
